Crochet Owl Hat

Welcome,

This is the first pattern I have ever written and considering I only learned to crochet 3 weeks ago I think I am doing pretty well.

I found a pattern for an owl hat but I ended up changing most of it to how I wanted it so this is my pattern for my owl hat that I made for my daughter. I made the 6 month size and I have also made the 2-3 year size. The 3 month size has not been tested so if anyone ever makes this let me know if it comes out the right size.

Free Crochet Owl Hat

This is my daughter wearing the hat, she is 3 months in this picture so it should be the right size when she is 6 months which is what I was aiming for.

Here is the pattern if you find any mistakes please let me know.

Owl Hat

Materials:

Size 7 (4.5mm) crochet hook

DK, 8ply Yarn

Yarn needle

Scissors

Sizing:

3 Months, 6 Months, 2-3 Years

Note:

This hat is worked in the round. The first Ch 2 of each round counts as the first hdc. Make sure to join each round with a sl st in the top of the first Ch 2. A video for the magic loop method can be found here: http://www.craftyminx.com/2011/10/crochet-school-lesson-16-working-in-the-round-1.html

3 Months: Stop increasing after Round 6 (60 st)
6 Months: Stop increasing after Round 7 (70 st)
2-3 Years: Stop increasing after Round 8 (80 st)

I crochet tightly so this hat could end up to big. To get the correct size measure your increase circle until it measures 1 inch smaller than the head circumference you are making the hat for. Here is a great chart which I use. It will also help you get the correct height of the hat. http://www.slugsontherefrigerator.com/home/2011/10/how-to-design-a-hat.html this is also great if you are using a different yarn or hook as you can adjust the hat how you want it.

I also think the earflaps are a bit long on the 2-3 year old pattern so try decreasing every row after you have done the first 4 rows if you want to make them shorter.

Pattern:

With CC, sc around the edge again. Remember to leave tails long enough to use in your braid.

Round 4: Chain 2, hdc in each st around (30hdc) Finish off leaving a tail long enough for sewing

Finish off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Eyebrows/Lashes

Attach colour with sl st to outside of eye. Ch 1, sc in first st and next 14 st (15 st) Finish off.

Nose

Ch 7

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (6 sc)

Row 2: sc2tog, sc in remaining sts. (5 sc)

Repeat row 2 until only 1 st remains.

Finish off leaving a tail long enough for sewing.

Weave in all ends.

Use photo for placement when sewing eyes and nose onto hat or position however you feel looks best. Use top layer of stitch when sewing onto the hat to keep the inside of the hat looking tidy.

Owl tassels or ears

For each colour used cut four 20cm (8”) strips. With crochet hook pull under the fourth row of the hat. Twist together and tie in a knot. Trim to a length you feel looks best.

Braids

Cut 3 long lengths of each colour (or number for you preferred thickness). Pull each colour through so they are doubled up and you end up with 6 lengths. Braid to the length you desire.

  4. This is a super-cute hat, and there aren't a lot of cute crochet patterns around, so thanks very much for taking the time to create a pattern (and in three different sizes, pretty amazing for a newbie crocheter!). Thank you, Diana.
